Poems

Nine plus one

From the June 1981 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"were there not ten cleansed?" (Luke 17:17)

There were nine who went on.
I was the nine . . . (the 9 X 9, X 9)
Who went on the way rejoicing.
"I am healed, I am healed!"
Oh, glorious healed and rejoicing me.
Rushing on, pell-mell,
Hurrying on my way . . .
MY WAY
My Way
my way . . .

The healing half-won.
(Too narrow, confining, restricting, empty.)

There was one who turned back.
I was the one . . . (just 1 X 1, X 1).
Oh, loud voice of thanks
For healing of flesh!
But wait, was there more?
Was there law in that glory?
Look back—was there light in the mercy?
Was there wholeness for one who returned to give thanks?
Turn back! Give glory to God for the
CHRIST-WAY
now, my way
the GodWay, revealed . . .

The healing is done.
(So limitless, expansive, ongoing, full.)
