What are we willing to sacrifice?

From the June 1981 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The biblical narrative of Abraham and Isaac introduces us to a profound theme. Of advanced years and still without an heir, Abraham heard God's promise, "Is any thing too hard for the Lord?" Gen. 18:14. He was blessed with a son.

But Abraham loved God even more than he loved his son. He was prepared to offer Isaac as proof of this. Although human sacrifice was an accepted custom of the times, Abraham found that God doesn't require the sacrifice of life. Isaac was spared, and the promise fulfilled.

As followers of Christ Jesus, we can trust our lives to God. We don't have to settle for less than Life. In reality, we don't have to struggle to hold on to Life; Life, God, embraces man and the universe and is therefore holding on to us! We know that God's loving law is operating right now to destroy mesmeric illusions of pain, ill health, decline. We know that the Christ, Truth, is the most potent healing agent available to all mankind and that it is as effective now as it was in Jesus' time. Divine conviction (rather than human fortitude) and spiritual understanding (instead of blind belief) lead to final victory over error.
