It was not until I married that I heard of Christian Science. Although my husband had been raised with Science, he was not an active student at that time. Yet, with much patience and love he helped me become aware of God's love for all mankind. And when our daughter was about one year old, I had my first glimpse of the healing power of prayer.
One day while crawling and pulling herself up on the furniture to stand, she accidentally pulled a pot of boiling water off a hot plate. She burned most of one foot and leg. My immediate reaction was to call her pediatrician. When I was unable to reach him, my husband very calmly asked if I would mind if he called a Christian Science practitioner for help. My response was that anything was better than nothing. The practitioner he phoned asked him to ponder certain spiritual truths, and although I can't recall specifically what my husband said to me, I know he spoke some of these truths.
The practitioner arrived shortly and asked to take the baby into another room. In a very few minutes the crying ceased. Soon the practitioner came out of the room with a sleeping baby in her arms. Afterward, since the child was at the crawling and walking stage, we agreed to keep the burned area on her leg covered. Within a day the little one was crawling and walking all around with no trouble. A day or two later a dear family friend, who had been a medical nurse, arrived as we were changing the bandage. She expressed concern about what she called third-degree burns. However, my thought was so free of fear because of the work done both by my husband and by the practitioner that none of the comments bothered me. We never mentioned the incident to the pediatrician. The healing was so complete that there was never even a scar.
