THE CHURCH IN ACTION

Handling attacks on the church

From the February 1982 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Recently the board of trustees of a branch church in Maryland decided they had to handle specifically, through prayer, arguments of disorganization directed against the Church of Christ, Scientist. This step was of such benefit that they shared with the membership the value of meeting attacks on the Cause actively in individual thought.

The board decided that their report at the next quarterly business meeting of the church would be devoted exclusively to this subject and that it would exclude all "nuts and bolts" of church activity. This was an unusual step for this church, the clerk reports. She writes, "However, the membership seemed hungry for a metaphysical thrust, and many members expressed great gratitude for the direction and content."

There was good attendance, the atmosphere was orderly and unified, and several important and potentially controversial business issues were settled by voice vote with minimum discussion. A bylaw question that had remained unsettled for two years was resolved harmoniously and quickly.
