Criticizing doesn't always help

From the February 1982 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Every individual has the opportunity to follow the Christ-example; to express his true identity as the perfect son of God. Church membership and offices can be important channels for spiritual progress. As each individual is encouraged to spiritualize his thought, the expansion of our understanding of Church is assured. But individual and collective development demands a purified atmosphere unpolluted by destructive criticism.

By praying for an atmosphere free of criticism, members support each other in individually demonstrating the healing power of Truth and Love. This is Principle, God, in action. Of course this does not mean that occasionally some Christly advice might not be helpful to another. But there is often a tendency toward criticizing others destructively instead of supporting the good they express.

Christ Jesus provided mankind with the perfect example of how to achieve this uplifting and healing atmosphere. When the lame, blind, dumb, and maimed were brought to him, Jesus did not condemn, prod, or reject them as poor representatives of the divine perfection. The Bible tells us, "He healed them." Matt. 15:30. His understanding of their pure spiritual identity enabled them to respond to the healing Christ.
