In the course of raising five children, we...

From the September 1982 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In the course of raising five children, we have had many proofs of God's care in healings of flu, colds, so-called childhood diseases, apparent heart trouble, and in quick recoveries following accidents.

One healing that I particularly cherish came about through a deepened understanding of a specific sentence from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I had injured my kneecap falling down a small flight of stairs, and after getting over the initial shock of it, had quickly resumed my activities. When I retired that evening, however, the pain was so intense, I could not lie quietly. As I reached out to God for a healing thought, this sentence came to me (Science and Health, p. 397): "Declare that you are not hurt and understand the reason why, and you will find the ensuing good effects to be in exact proportion to your disbelief in physics, and your fidelity to divine metaphysics, confidence in God as All, which the Scriptures declare Him to be." I realized that pain was no part of me as God's spiritual idea and proceeded to follow the directives outlined in the statement just quoted. After about ten minutes of declaring that I was not hurt, understanding the spiritually scientific reasons behind this declaration, and feeling confidence in God's allness, I found myself suddenly and completely free of pain. The next morning and thereafter I was able to move without restriction.

One evening some years ago our then ten-year-old son woke up complaining of intense chest pains and of feeling as though a large bubble had been caught in his chest. I prayed diligently as we are taught in Christian Science. Shortly, I felt that because of the urgency of the situation, I should call my Christian Science teacher for help through prayer. I still remember hearing her firm, clear statement: "He's not a mortal, you know!" That was all she said, but it proved to be all that was needed. Sometime afterward the boy fell asleep. I continued to pray, supporting the metaphysical work my teacher had already done. Later, when I went in to check on him, this boy suddenly sat bolt upright, opened his eyes, and said loudly, "I'm perfect!" Then he lay down again and went back to sleep. I simply marveled at this fine healing in Christian Science and was overwhelmed with gratitude for my teacher's prayerful help in proving God's love for His children. The problem never recurred.
