"...study thoroughly the Scriptures..."

From the September 1982 issue of The Christian Science Journal

One day while studying, I read this statement by Mrs. Eddy, which startled me: "After class teaching, he does best in the investigation of Christian Science who is most reliant on himself and God. My students are taught the divine Principle and rules of the Science of Mind-healing. What they need thereafter is to study thoroughly the Scriptures and 'Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.'"Miscellaneous Writings, p. 87.

I paused over the words "study thoroughly the Scriptures." How many Christian Scientists, including myself, I wondered, do actually "study thoroughly" the Scriptures? Aside from regular work with the Bible Lesson in the Christian Science Quarterly, how can a Scientist study the Scriptures without putting Science and Health and Mrs. Eddy's other writings aside for a time? A student of Christian Science could hardly afford to do this.

These questions lingered for about a week. Then suddenly I remembered from previous Concordance study that there were several hundred references in her writings to the words "Bible" and "Scriptures." Reading these would help me become better acquainted with our Leader's Bible emphasis.
