Report of the senses—superseded by Truth

From the September 1982 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A simple but mighty statement at the heart of Christian Science practice is Christ Jesus' teaching, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."John 8:32.

The Master's works vividly illustrate the truth that frees us. They show unmistakably that the power of God supersedes and obliterates the supposed power of evil and suffering. Further, these works show us that because God is infinite good, the only creator, discord has no basis in reality—it's nonexistent— despite what the physical senses report.

The senses would unrelentingly oppose this conclusion. The commonplace definition of disease, for example, is based on their report: an actual, physical condition to be removed through surgery, drugs, or some other material method. The senses label deformity and poverty and tyranny as concrete realities we can do little to eliminate. Moreover, the senses insist that existence itself is matter-based, based, subject to every conceivable misfortune, man being nothing more than a vulnerable, physical structure subject to forces beyond his control. But man is spiritual, invulnerable, because his creator, God, is Spirit. Man is governed by the law of God, not by chance or by blind physical forces or some unjust material law.
