One hears on all sides, via radio, television, by word of mouth and through the press, reports of unemployment throughout the world. How wonderful to know that the spiritual fact that man, as God's idea, is always fully employed, can be demonstrated in Christian Science.
For five years after I left school, I was unable to find a regular job. It was during a time of worldwide economic difficulties. I was apprenticed to a milliner for a short while but did not seem to have any aptitude for this type of work. Then I managed to find work at a big department store during the Christmas/New Year period. However, that was terminated too when the busy season was over. Things looked pretty bleak, and I felt thoroughly depressed. A member of the family was always saying to me, "When are you going to get a job?" Yet I didn't know how to go about finding one, and I wasn't especially trained for anything.
Now, I was at that time a pupil in the Christian Science Sunday School. I attended regularly each week and knew that Christian Science does heal, for I had seen evidence of this in the family. For instance, early one morning I had discovered that our dog had eaten some poison during the night and appeared to be dying. I was very fond of this pet, and in my anguish I appealed to my eldest sister, a class-taught Christian Scientist, to pray for me. She lovingly comforted me and sent me off to school, quietly telling me that all was well. I felt this to be true, and during the day whenever the dog came to thought, I was reassured by recalling my sister's steadfast trust in God. Sure enough, when I returned home that afternoon, the dog came bounding across the lawn to welcome me joyously; he was fully recovered. I was so grateful. The family enjoyed the company of that pet for many more years.
