To write of what Christian Science has done for me is impossible without first acknowledging, with great gratitude, that the good brought to the world by this Science has come solely through the inspired writings of our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy.
From childhood I have found that God is "a very present help in trouble" (Ps. 46:1). Some troubles have seemed severe, others acute, and occasionally they have been long-lasting. Yet the spiritual truths of Christian Science, when rightly practiced, have "delivered me out of all trouble" (Ps. 54:7).
As a child I suffered from asthma. When the attacks came, I often gained instantaneous relief through my own prayers or through the help of my parents or a Christian Science practitioner. At other times, recovery was slow, and the final healing seemed elusive. At no time, however, did I wish or choose to seek relief through medical means. Rather, I was impelled to study and demonstrate as best I could the healing precepts of Christian Science. And I received immeasurable spiritual growth as a result of this study and prayer.
