The art of being a Christian Scientist

From the July 1984 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"Art when really understood is the province of every human being," The Art Spirit (Philadelphia and New York:J. B. Lippincott Company, 1960), p. 15. writes Robert Henri in his book The Art Spirit. Most of us think that we cannot possibly be artists. We have no artistic talent, we say, but we wish we could express our feelings in some beautiful way. And often, even genuinely talented artists stand admiringly before the great masters of art, longing to paint such masterpieces.

Renowned artists bring to us beauty and thought-provoking ideas that anyone can appreciate if he will. But have we ever realized that we also can bring uplifting art to mankind? We can bring the healing and comforting art of Christian Science. Our Leader has something to say about being such an artist. Mrs. Eddy writes in Miscellaneous Writings, "The truest art of Christian Science is to be a Christian Scientist; and it demands more than a Raphael to delineate this art." Mis., p. 375.

The art of Christian Science is not a material representation of good, but rather a spiritual expression of divine Love's healing presence. This art shows forth the spirit of Christian Science exemplified in our lives. And how this art is needed to heal others of their sicknesses and sorrow!
