THE CHURCH IN ACTION

"INDIVIDUAL SPIRITUALITY AND THE FUTURE OF MANKIND"

A pictorial collage of the international College Organizations Meeting at The Mother Church, August 16-18, 1985

From the November 1985 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The December 8, 1984, videoconference brought up the vital theme from the writings of our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, about living for all mankind (see Miscellaneous Writings, p. 294) and naturally impelled Christian Scientists to be thinking more about how to fulfill that requirement. The College Organizations Meeting in August focused on the importance of individual spiritual growth in actually being prepared to serve mankind.

What really is "individual spirituality"? It's not a matter of retreating to some inner zone of the human "me" in which to find personal refuge from the challenges of the world. So what is it, and what does it have to do with the larger life of mankind and its spiritual future? ...

This was foremost among the issues addressed at the meeting this year, in which students, faculty, graduates, and organization advisors from about forty countries joined together at The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts.
