Most of my healings in Christian Science have been in the areas of smoking and drinking, minor physical difficulties, and everyday life challenges. My faith in God and my understanding of Science had not been severely tried until a few years ago. It was about three o'clock on the Sunday morning before Thanksgiving. For about two weeks prior to this I had been struggling with what I was jokingly describing to others as a "hitch in my get-along" —a slight discomfort in my back.
The "hitch" was more than uncomfortable that Sunday morning though. In fact, it had turned into extreme pain extending from one hip to my toes. I hobbled to the bathroom. However, when I tried to return to bed, I found myself unable to walk and in such pain that I momentarily cried out, waking my roommate across the hall. She came to my aid, and though at first she was somewhat overcome by my distress, she was soon able to get my telephone book so that I could call a Christian Science practitioner.
The practitioner responded to my need immediately, calming my fears and assuring me of God's love for me. She recommended that I work with the twenty-third Psalm in the Bible and the spiritual sense of it given by Mrs. Eddy in Science and Health (see p. 578). Doing so helped me feel certain that divine Love is ever present and always caring for each of us.
