As a young woman, my grandmother was told by doctors that she had only a few months to live. Alone with a young son, she left her native Scotland to join relatives who could care for her in Canada. While she was there, a neighbor introduced her to Christian Science by giving her a copy of the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. Her hungry, receptive heart drank in the truths as she read the book, and she was healed. In gratitude she began attending the local branch Church of Christ, Scientist, and enrolled her son in the Sunday School. Later, she moved to the United States where she joined another branch church. In time, she became the church organist, and after that she was elected First Reader. Eventually, she became a Christian Science practitioner.
Her son, my father, in turn found great comfort in Christian Science, and he and my mother raised three children depending on its teachings. I always admired my grandmother's absolute faith in the teachings of the Bible and our textbook, which alone had healed her.
There were many happy years as I was growing up, where Christian Science made the vital difference. We children thrived on the pure truths of this Science and the knowledge that with God anything right or good is possible. With this solid background, it was easy occasionally to take for granted the regular freedom from illness we experienced. Those rare times when a need arose, the Christian Science treatment given the situation was effective, and healings were often instantaneous.
