What makes man man?

From the January 1986 issue of The Christian Science Journal

An area of thought that challenges and disturbs many people today concerns the great advances being made in physical science and technology, especially in the field of medicine. Two developments that are receiving particular attention involve genetic engineering and organ transplants. Human knowledge and technical skill have leaped so far ahead of public thought and of moral and ethical considerations that the average individual is left amazed, concerned, and often deeply troubled.

One has to wonder: What makes man man? What determines my identity? What is the essence of life? Who has the right to determine what kind or form of life should be developed or allowed to exist?

The enormous advances in natural science and in the resulting technology have not really brought us any closer to answers, but the need for answers certainly has become more intense.
