When it's right to say "never"

From the July 1986 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Many of us have had to retract a "never." Statements such as "My children would never act like that" or "I'll never forgive her" can fall rather rapidly. Many of our "never" statements are tinged with pride. Others may be tainted with anger or discouragement, such as "I'll never try to help him again" or "I'll never be able to overcome this problem." So many of our "never" statements are short-lived that we sometimes hear people say, "Never say never!"

In Christian Science, however, one learns to take quite a different view of the word never. While the Christian metaphysician may choose to remove the word never from his casual daily conversations, he comes to cherish this word in his prayers because so many vital, healing facts hinge on a spiritual sense of never.

Consider, for example, the spiritual reality that man is never separated from God. This joyous spiritual truth shatters thoughts of fear and discouragement. And when we recognize that never means "at no time and under no circumstances," we see that God's loving care for us is perpetual, enduring, and uninterrupted.
