My family was at a camp for Christian Scientists a few summers ago. One day during a game of volleyball I ran after the ball to keep it from going into the water. As I was running I caught my toe on the end of a tree root. Part of the root went up under my toenail. My toe hurt a lot.
A Christian Science nurse, who was at the volleyball game, came over and took me to the director's cabin where she cleaned and bandaged the toe. The piece of root was still stuck under my toenail. After that my mom and dad carried me back to our cabin. My toe was still hurting, so we borrowed a Christian Science Hymnal and sang hymns like "O gentle presence" and "Saw ye my Saviour?" [The two hymns, "Mother's Evening Prayer" (No. 207) and "Communion Hymn" (No. 298) were originally written as poems by Mrs. Eddy.] We also prayed and thought about the ninety-first Psalm. Several hours later I fell asleep.
In the morning I felt much better. I walked to breakfast and everywhere else I needed to go. But the piece of wood was still under my toenail. So Dad and I called a Christian Science practitioner.
