Nullifying mental intrusion

From the August 1986 issue of The Christian Science Journal

To a greater or lesser degree, all of us are exposed to the use of techniques that would manipulate us mentally. Their lighter efforts range from sophisticated attempts to persuade us to buy things— often things we don't want or need—to meddling with our thoughts from well-meant but misdirected motives. In extreme instances they try with a wicked intent to influence our thinking and lead us into error. This hidden operation of human willpower needs to be guarded against.

Even a seasoned metaphysician may be misled when evil appears in a pleasant guise or seems to work through persons and circumstances in ways that often appear desirable or enjoyable. The Christian Scientist needs to wake up to what is going on and extricate himself from such entanglements, so that he will not find himself on the broad road leading to spiritual ruin instead of further along the Christly path he thought he was treading. This is why one cannot afford to rely solely on human ability to detect error, but needs to listen alertly for the will of God, good. Christ Jesus stated, in speaking of our need to dwell in the Christ-power, "Without me ye can do nothing."John 15:5.

The only real antidote for the workings of human willpower is obedience to God's will. And how do we do what is pleasing to Him? By conforming our thoughts and deeds to the teachings of the Master.
