Finding peace within and without

From the August 1986 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Where do we find peace? Is it something outside or inside us? We generally conceive of two separate states of peace. One is the tranquillity we sometimes discover when we withdraw from what we call the outside world and spend some time alone in quiet contemplation. The other is the hoped-for world condition that humanity doesn't seem to be able to achieve. We wish that world out there would shape up and fulfill our desire for harmony.

Wouldn't it be startling to discover that these two states are not two but essentially one — that mankind has the means gradually to attain the all-inclusive peace that the human heart seeks? This premise is a basic part of the teachings of Jesus and of Christian Science.

We are all familiar with Jesus' words "The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you."Luke 17: 20, 21. Doesn't this imply that the kingdom of God is found in consciousness?
