Overcoming resistance to Christian Science

From the October 1987 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Because modern society is so often centered on materialism, it tends to rebel against the spiritual standards of Christian Science. So it's not unusual for active Christian Scientists to encounter resistance to the healing truth they are undertaking to live. Resistance may take the form of individual or group opposition. But whatever its outward manifestation, its source is always the same: mortal mind, opposed to God's control of man and the universe.

Throughout human history, materialistic thought has attempted to impede mankind's progressive understanding of God's spiritual law. The great Old Testament leader Moses faced such resistance. Moses followed God's command to lead the children of Israel from captivity into a land of promised prosperity, yet they often complained and criticized him. At one point, when some of them had rebelled against his leadership, he stated clearly the source of his authority: "The Lord hath sent me to do all these works; for I have not done them of mine own mind." Num. 16:28. Moses acknowledged God as the source of all power and ability. By working in obedience to God, he was protected and was a successful leader.

We can learn from Moses' example and realize that the resistance which we confront in our lives is the protesting of error against the truth of God and His perfect creation. Understanding this lifts the burden of responsibility for the defense of Christian Science from our shoulders as persecuted mortals, and we realize that God is infinitely capable of asserting divine authority.
