Spiritual insight

From the October 1987 issue of The Christian Science Journal

One dictionary defines insight as "the ability to see and understand clearly the inner nature of things . . . ." Then, how would one define spiritual insight? Isn't it a perception of reality—the discernment of all things real from the elevation of consciousness that reveals God as divine Principle? If this is so, how can one gain this spiritual insight? Is it applicable to the many problems plaguing humanity today?

We can gain enlightenment on this subject through a study of the Bible. The spiritual meaning of the Scriptures uplifts humanity out of dullness, apathy, and stagnation. The Bible presents many instances of protection and healing that came about through attaining a clear view into the spiritual "inner nature of things."

For instance, in the Old Testament we read of the attempt of the Syrians, who were warring against Israel, to capture the prophet Elisha. During the night the city of Dothan was surrounded by the great Syrian host. With the dawn, Elisha's servant, beholding the armed forces of the enemy, was fearful. Elisha's prayers to God for the servant's enlightenment were answered, for "the Lord opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha." II Kings 6:17.
