Divine Love surely led our family to Christian Science. One Sunday in the early 1960s a daughter suggested that we attend the Church of Christ, Scientist, across the street. We did and found the atmosphere so loving and joyous we continued attending, never returning to our former church. This was the beginning of a beautiful new way of life for us, abounding in spiritual growth and blessings.
An early healing impressed upon me the fact that even one simple statement of Truth, understood and held to with conviction, is effectual. One evening while working in the basement, I heard a cry from our youngest daughter, then about eight, and ran upstairs to find her enveloped in flames. (As she had reached into a cupboard, her dress had caught fire from one of the burner pilots on the stove.)
I quickly beat at the flames with my hands, declaring aloud to my daughter with absolute conviction, "You are God's perfect child." It was a spiritual fact I had grasped clearly, soon after beginning to study Christian Science. I was able to extinguish the flames. Immediately afterward I wrapped my hands in a towel, so I would not look at them.
