The truth makes free

From the February 1987 issue of The Christian Science Journal

There was a time when I was faced with several unsolved problems. I was earnestly praying for the solutions to these problems, but I wasn't finding them. I was wakened one night with a clear thought: Walk out of your problems. I knew this was the answer, but what did it mean to "walk out of the problem"? How would I do that? I turned to my dictionary and found an explanation of the Bible phrase "to walk with God": "to have intimate communion with God." Yes, I thought, that is the only way to solve any problem. And as I was obedient, soon my problems were solved.

Dwelling on difficulties, the why and what of them, you go around in circles and come right back to the difficulty. Christ Jesus said, "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." John 8:31, 32. Isn't that communing with God?

We commune with God in prayer. In Christian Science, treatment is a specific kind of prayer—prayer based on perfect God and perfect man. As Mrs. Eddy states in Science and Health, "The Christlike understanding of scientific being and divine healing includes a perfect Principle and idea,—perfect God and perfect man,—as the basis of thought and demonstration." Science and Health,p. 259. In treatment we turn to God, seeking to understand and feel ever more deeply that presence of the Christ which regenerates and heals. In treatment we affirm, with strong spiritual conviction, the truth of God's allness, His ever-presence, all-power, and infinite love. Such treatment also necessarily denies that man, the image and likeness of God, is sick, diseased, sinful, or beset by unsolved problems.
