The joy of discovering our true identity

From the March 1987 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"As a drop of water is one with the ocean, a ray of light one with the sun, even so God and man, Father and son, are one in being." Science and Health, p. 361. What a revelation it was to me when I first read these words in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I gained fresh insight into what Christ Jesus must have felt when he avowed, "I and my Father are one." John 10:30.

As a new student of Christian Science I was discovering that this one infinite God is Spirit, infinite Mind, Truth, Love, and not a person—in the sense of His being manlike. I had, at last, discovered a wholly spiritual basis from which I could reason about the man created by God in His image and likeness, spoken of in the Scriptures. This spiritual image was certainly contrary to what I saw as the "me" in the mirror, but my education in discerning the actuality of my spiritual being had begun!

In Science and Health we find an answer to the question "What are body and Soul?" It reads in part, "Identity is the reflection of Spirit, the reflection in multifarious forms of the living Principle, Love." Science and Health, p. 477. As I studied this, I saw more clearly that I could have but one identity—the God-created one. I reasoned that since God is Spirit, Mind, man's true identity is forever mirroring the perfect substance and character of Spirit. The theory of human personality with human form is not the truth of man's being. Matter and Spirit, being opposites, never blend or coexist. Matter is the falsity, not the fact, of man's existence. Real selfhood is ever one with its Maker.
