The inseparability of the individual and an active, healing church

From the March 1987 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Church—one of the Biblical terms spiritually interpreted by Mrs. Eddy in the Glossary of Science and Health—is defined there in two paragraphs. The first describes in two concise phrases the spiritual idea Church. The second explains how the human expression of that spiritual concept serves mankind. In one remarkable sentence Mrs. Eddy presents a universal, active ideal that ministers to every need of mankind.

"Church. The structure of Truth and Love; whatever rests upon and proceeds from divine Principle.

"The Church is that institution, which affords proof of its utility and is found elevating the race, rousing the dormant understanding from material beliefs to the apprehension of spiritual ideas and the demonstration of divine Science, thereby casting out devils, or error, and healing the sick." Science and Health, p. 583.
