When the engine backfired

From the March 1987 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Years ago, after learning of and coming to love Christian Science, I was given the opportunity of seeing God, Truth, prove to me an invaluable lesson.

This occurrence took place in my garage just after six years of war in Europe, when things such as car batteries were not obtainable. To start my car's engine, I had to swing its starting handle, and one day while I was doing this the engine backfired. This threw me violently against the sharp corner of a shelf.

I turned fervently to God and felt clearly guided to affirm that the accident "had never happened." I found it difficult sincerely to believe that, but as I prayed I saw that indeed it had never happened to my true, spiritual being as God's likeness.
