My first testimony appeared in the Christian Science Sentinel over thirty years ago. Since that time I have continued to have many proofs, through the study and application of Christian Science, of the healing, protecting, and guiding power of God.
After graduating from university and taking up a teaching career in Australia, I decided to apply for postgraduate study at a British university. My application was quickly accepted, but there were several problems to resolve. I needed financial support, as my wife and I had a new baby. Also, I was teaching a high-school class and needed a qualified replacement. Above all, I felt I needed to be quite sure that it was right for us to go.
One evening I prayed long and earnestly for God's direction. Suddenly these words came to mind: "Walk thou with courage each step of the way." I found the phrase in Hymn 278 in the Christian Science Hymnal. The full verse reads:
