When I was a teen-ager I felt unshakably convinced that divine Science is indeed the promised Comforter. In the words of Isaiah (30:21): "And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left." Within the next several years I moved away from home to attend a university and joined the Christian Science college organization, where I served as Reader. I became a member of The Mother Church and a branch church and, to my everlasting gratitude, had the blessing of class instruction from a teacher of Christian Science.
At the start of my junior year, my parents' finances were severely strained. It was thought that I would be unable to graduate. Through prayer, however, a showering of rich blessings poured forth instead. Among them were a grant that permitted me to travel overseas prior to graduate study and a fellowship to finance my graduate work.
A few weeks after I received my master's degree, the university informed me that I was one quarter short of the units required for a bachelor's degree—which I had received the year before! An administrator told me that I must return as a full-time student for one quarter, or the university would rescind both degrees. I was penniless. I no longer had my fellowship, and I knew of no one to whom I could apply for funds.
