I was raised in a non-Christian religion. When I was a teen-ager I stopped doing my prayers, however, because I did not understand the sentences I had had to learn by heart in those prayers. But every day I did pray in my own words in my own way. I continued this practice until my mid-thirties.
Then one year I became very ill. According to medical diagnosis, I was suffering from cancer in an advanced stage. I was operated on twice and received many radiation treatments, but to no avail. The doctors informed my husband and parents about my grave condition, telling them that I could not live longer than several years.
At this time a sister-in-law began getting interested in Christian Science, and she visited me every day and told me about the wonderful religion she had found. But I was not interested at all in her talk and explanations. Then one day I thought I would stop the stream of words by asking her whether she could provide me with a book on Christian Science so that I could study for myself. My sister-in-law was very pleased with my request, and the following day she gave me the book Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy.
