Am I going in the right direction?

Learning about Christian Science

From the April 1992 issue of The Christian Science Journal

At some point in our experience most of us have grappled with the question "What is my real purpose in life, my true career?" We yearn to see our specific path clearly and to find fulfillment by following it. Yet the cold, hard "realities" of life would have us doubt that possibility, and doubt even more that there's a God who can help.

It does often seem that our lives are a series of disconnected steps that are largely the result of chance or circumstance. But Christian Science helps us see things from another standpoint, from a spiritual view that tells us God does indeed exist, that He loves us, and that we can find the appropriate path with the guidance of His law. The book of Proverbs tells us simply: "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." Prov. 3:5, 6

It's a vital concept, as I discovered a number of years ago when I found myself at a crossroads. I listed my careers options as I saw them—A, B, C, or D—and gave God a multiple choice so that I would know which direction was right. The answer turned out to be something I hadn't anticipated and certainly had not listed. Let me explain.
