The demands of Christ

From the July 1992 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Sometimes I've heard it said that Christ Jesus never asked anything of those he healed — that he just healed people, no questions asked. Is that true?

If we study the New Testament, we find that the Master did often demand some sign that those he healed were willing to let the power of Christ, Truth, transform them. For instance, he told with a withered hand to do what had seemed impossible to do. He said to him, "Stretch forth thine hand,"  Matt. 12:13. and the man was healed.

In her book Unity of Good, Mary Baker Eddy says of Jesus, "He demanded a change of consciousness and evidence, and effected this change through the higher laws of God."  Un., p. 11. Jesus knew the love of God for His own children. And through his tender view of each one as the perfect offspring of God, untouched by evil, he was able to effect the needed change through divine power.
