Testimonies of Healing

It is with much gratitude that...

From the June 1993 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It is with much gratitude that I share two of my many healings in Christian Science. One day I slipped on a muddy creek bank and hit my spine on a large rock. The ninety-first Psalm, which I had learned in the Christian Science Sunday School, comforted and sustained me. A family member said that a bone might have been dislocated. I turned to Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy and read, "In Science, no breakage nor dislocation can really occur." I also remembered that the Bible says, "In him we live, and move, and have our being." As God's child, I always have my being in Him. The understanding of these spiritual facts healed me.

I was Second Reader in my branch church at that time, and was able to be in my place there that Sunday. I stood throughout the reading of the Lesson-Sermon with no difficulty; the healing was complete.

Later I had another healing that continues to inspire me. In an automobile collision, my chin struck the steering wheel with force; my lip was cut and the lower front teeth were pushed back a full inch. I immediately called a Christian Science practitioner, who calmed and comforted me with assurances of God's ever-presence as our refuge and strength. She said she would continue to pray for me. Soon the bleeding stopped, and I felt free of all pain.

Someone suggested I see a dentist to have the teeth set back in line; I called one whom I knew, and this kind man said to come to his office. When he looked at my mouth, he told me he could not help me because my jaw was broken, and he would arrange for a physician to set the jaw. He left me alone, and I prayed silently, "Father, I am listening for Your guidance and am willing to do whatever is right." The dentist returned and said a certain doctor would meet me at a hospital emergency room. When I replied that I would not go to the hospital, he was very patient and said he would try to find someone to take care of me in his office. Again I prayed as before, knowing that I could trust God completely.

When the dentist came back, he reported he had been unable to find anyone but would keep trying. I thanked him and said I would go home.

A friend and fellow church member worked a few blocks away, and I asked to have her called to come and take me home. She came right away and was very supportive. When I called the practitioner to tell her what had happened, I told her I wanted to rely exclusively on Christian Science treatment. She said that she would surely support me, even were I to have the bone set, but that it was my decision. I told her that I had always relied on God for healing and knew that all things are possible to God. My friend read some hymns to me. I then thanked her for her loving help and she returned to work.

Again I read from Science and Health: "Christian Science is always the most skilful surgeon, but surgery is the branch of its healing which will be last acknowledged. However, it is but just to say that the author has already in her possession well-authenticated records of the cure, by herself and her students through mental surgery alone, of broken bones, dislocated joints, and spinal vertebræ." I was glad to have chosen "the most skilful surgeon"!

My sister, whom I had been going to visit, came to my home instead. For four days she was a wonderful aid, handling phone calls, tending to the car, and declaring to me many truths of Christian Science. We held mentally to the scientific fact that my spiritual individuality is intact and cannot be touched by accident or injury; and that this fact can be demonstrated, as Christ Jesus did in his healing work. The practitioner gave me relevant references from the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's writings with which to study and pray.

Within one week, without surgery or manipulation, my lip healed, my teeth had gone back into place, and my jaw had realigned. On the eighth day I was able to practice reading for church, and on Sunday I carried out my duty as Second Reader. Within two weeks I was eating solid food and brushing my teeth as usual.

I truly appreciate the work of the practitioner and the help of my friend and of my sister—their undoubting support certainly contributed to this healing. My heart is filled with gratitude to our Master, Christ Jesus, and to our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy.
