Message from Board of Trustees of The Christian Science Publishing Society

From the August 1993 issue of The Christian Science Journal

After the publishing of the ground-breaking textbook of Christian Science, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, the first periodical founded by Mary Baker Eddy was The Christian Science Journal in 1883. Her statement of its purpose is specific — it is "designed to put on record the divine Science of Truth . . ." (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 353). Is there not a relationship between the transforming power of the textbook and the putting-on-record purpose of the first periodical she founded?

Engraved in twenty-one-inch letters on the limestone front of the Publishing Society building in Boston is the verse from Psalms "The Lord gave the word: great was the company of those that published it" (68:11). This great company — this worldwide "publishing society" —includes you, the readers and subscribers of the Journal.

About 80 percent of the Journal's content is contributed by its own readers. This indicates an involved and committed readership of "publishers" and means that each new issue puts "on record the divine Science of Truth" in a contemporary, fresh, vital manner—for today.
