Testimonies of Healing

I had gone to the Department...

From the October 1994 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I had gone to the Department of Motor Vehicles to renew my driver's license. At one point I was asked to read from a board at a close distance. As I read, an official stopped me to be sure I was following his instructions. I began reading again. Once more he stopped me to ask if I wore glasses to drive. I answered, "No." After the third time, and to my astonishment, he said, "Sir, you are reading numbers, and you should be reading letters!" He immediately wrote a recommendation that I should see an eye doctor.

As a Christian Scientist, even in that moment of distress I rejoiced, knowing well that my sight was as perfect and harmonious as that of my creator. God created all things, including my true, spiritual sight, to be good. A passage from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures came to thought: "Jesus beheld in Science the perfect man, who appeared to him where sinning mortal man appears to mortals. In this perfect man the Saviour saw God's own likeness, and this correct view of man healed the sick" (pp. 476-477). Likewise I did not condemn myself, but saw this as an opportunity for more spiritual understanding of God and man.

When I came home, I called a Christian Science practitioner to pray for me. In our conversation I shared a healing I'd had previously of an excruciating pain in one eye, when during a Sunday church service I had wholeheartedly embraced the spiritual truths I was hearing about. These truths came to me as I listened to the account of Jesus healing two blind men by the roadside, who had reached out and yearned for the transforming and regenerating spirit of the Christ. Despite the multitude's insistence to "hold their peace," he healed them (see Matt. 20:30-34).
