Although I have been a Christian Scientist since preschool, this is the first time I have written to express gratitude for the many blessings that have come to me from my study of this practical religion.
In high school, playing basketball on an outdoor court, I twisted my ankle severely. The pain was intense, and I made my way home, just across the street. There was much swelling, and I had to stay on the bed because the slightest movement or jarring caused pain.
I prayed with my mother, and called a Christian Science practitioner for help. I remember studying a phrase from Science and Health which discusses locomotion (a new concept for me at the time). The passage reads, "To understand that Mind is infinite, not bounded by corporeality, not dependent upon the ear and eye for sound or sight nor upon muscles and bones for locomotion, is a step towards the Mind-science by which we discern man's nature and existence" (p. 84). We also sang hymns with words by Mrs. Eddy. I had complete childlike confidence in God's willingness and power to heal me.
