I would like to express some of the immeasurable thanks I feel for Christian Science. It has been for me like the leaven the woman put in the three measures of meal (see Luke 13:21); it has transformed my goals, motives, well-being, perception, relationships—my very life.
Even though the preventive and curative aspects of Christian Science were effectively practiced in my home when I was growing up, while in my late teens I was attracted to activities that were not very uplifting, and like the prodigal son in Jesus' parable, I "wasted [my] substance with riotous living" (Luke 15:13). Finally, after finding my immoral lifestyle unfulfilling and depressing (and probably because of the many prayers of my mother), I decided to return to what I felt was right. And much like the prodigal son, I came home to my Father and to the kingdom of heaven. Among other things, I began to attend church once again.
When I then developed symptoms of a kidney illness, my husband was alarmed. I told him I wanted to heal this through Christian Science. He told me that because of the symptoms, I really needed either to heal it quickly or to go to a doctor. Before this came up, my mom had suggested I pray about expressing purity. Then, when I called a Christian Science practitioner for prayerful help to heal the kidney problem, she said the same thing. (Aha! I had thought I had committed myself to purity simply by getting married.)
