"Yes, my prayer can help the world"

From the June 1994 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Daily we read or hear of the suffering of war-ravaged people; we see pictures of starvation and hear heart-wrenching reports of tragedy. And we ask the question "Can I help right now, right where I am?" To which we can always answer, "Yes, I can help—I can pray. I can bring hope, comfort, and the reassurance that there is a power for good present in everyone's life to save him." Prayer reveals the complete man of God's creating, forever sustained in his oneness with Him.

How do you start this prayer? Select any news item. Petition and acknowledge God's love for all concerned. Humbly ask for His guidance in your prayer. Expectantly listen for answers, and then rejoice in the ideas that come to you.

When the report tells of injustice, brutality, hunger, the loss of home or individual rights, ask yourself, "What are the specific needs here? And what does God, as Truth and Love, know about these discords?" Does Truth know injustice? No, Truth knows only that which is lawful and invariably right. Reasoning with spiritual truths, we exchange our own alarmed thoughts for the acknowledgment of the present reality of Truth and Love. We do this until we understand and trust that God's Love can and will fulfill every need. Such prayer lifts human consciousness above fear and helpless acceptance of evil into conformity with the divine consciousness, until peace reigns in our thought.
