Mary Baker Eddy: a lifetime of healing

God's gracious preparation (1843-1860)

From the February 1995 issue of The Christian Science Journal

This series of articles focuses on the healings brought about by Mary Baker Eddy. These healings began in her childhood and continued throughout her life—some of them have not been previously published. Presented in their historical context, they offer a clear standard for the healing practice of Christian Science, as set forth by its Discoverer and Founder, Mary Baker Eddy.

In December 1843, when Mary Baker Eddy was a young bride, she and her husband, George Glover, sailed from New England to South Carolina to begin their married life together. The arduous experiences this young New Hampshire woman was soon to encounter were significant to her spiritual preparation for her role as Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science.

The ship the Glovers were sailing on was in the hands of divine Providence as it tossed perilously on the waves, with the winds shrieking through its masts. A violent storm had descended on the vessel just as it was to pass several sandbars and enter the harbor at Charleston, South Carolina. Below in their stateroom, the young couple knelt in fervent prayer. The captain had just left them. He had never seen such a storm and had no hope that the ship could be saved.
