Just recently I had an experience that I now realise proves the truth of the statement "Trials are proofs of God's care" (Science and Health, p. 66).
Some time back my husband was ill and was taken to hospital. I stayed with him. I made the utmost effort to keep up the study of Christian Science, knowing that God was always protecting me. But as the days passed, and my husband's health was not improving, I found that I was getting somewhat confused in my thinking; my husband was relying on medicine to heal him, while I chose to rely on prayer and spiritual understanding for my own needs. So I called on a practitioner to help me.
She reminded me that man reflects God all the time, and that his true selfhood is the expression of God's being, untouched by material laws and verdicts; also that in God's kingdom no such thing exists as a "medical atmosphere" or "medical laws." She reminded me also that doctors and nurses are not just a bunch of people. They, too, are God's children, dwelling in His kingdom. God cares for them, loves them. She reminded me not to accept medical verdicts either for good or for bad, because both are based on the concept that man's health and security are in question and can fluctuate. God's unerring law is in operation all the time.
