Christ Jesus spoke to the public in everyday language with parables and examples from daily life because, as the Gospel of Matthew records, the multitudes did not see, hear, or understand sufficiently in a spiritual way. See Matt. 13:13 Jesus often communicated to the public with the "milk" of God's Word. Yet the Master also fed his disciples with spiritual "meat," or the profound healing revelation of God's oneness and allness. For Christians today who spiritually understand and prove to some degree their unity with God, and are led to dig deeper into the reality of perfect God and man, the meat of God's inspired Word is available for their spiritual nourishment, and for their further healing proof and progress.
Mary Baker Eddy, the author of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, was, as she describes it, "a scribe under orders." Miscellaneous Writings, p. 311 After deep, thorough study of the Scriptures, and as a result of revelation, reason, and clear-cut proofs of God's healing power, she wrote down and published what God revealed to her. Over the years she revised Science and Health a number of times, making it more lucid, luminous, and complete.
Mrs. Eddy gave to her discovery the name Christian Science. It is Science because it is divine, not human, predicated of divine Principle, God. Its healing efficacy can be proved consistently with a spiritual understanding of God's law, of infinite Spirit's oneness and allness. It is Christian in the deepest sense because its demonstration of divine Love brings healing into human lives. It presents both the milk and meat of God's Word as Jesus taught and practiced it.
