It seems to be human nature to look to others for help in times of great need. But what happens when we find ourselves in a situation where we are isolated from help? The Bible is filled with accounts of those who turned to God when all human aid seemed out of reach.
Christ Jesus is the best example of an individual who knew that even in one's greatest extremity—in his case the crucifixion—God is the only source of help. His family and followers could do nothing to save him. But Jesus' mission was to prove that Life is God, Spirit, ever present and indestructible. Already he had proved the spiritual origin of man's life and capability by healing the lame, the blind, and the deaf. But when he was on the cross, was he facing a power and presence greater than God and capable of extinguishing life? No. Jesus' resurrection showed that God had never deserted him. In fact, God is the only real power and presence there is.
This was one of the lessons I began to learn as a young student of Christian Science, during and after the Second World War. I heard many individuals give testimonies about finding safety through prayer when they were caught up in the war. I was in awe of what I was hearing. Was there indeed a God who is the only presence and the only power in the universe? The answer came gradually, yet persistently, as I dug deep into the Bible along with the writings of Mary Baker Eddy. In reality, the only universe there is, is God's perfect, spiritual creation. God, the only creator and the one cause, has made His creation purely spiritual. There is nothing in what God creates to harm or be harmed.
