Applying for membership in The Mother Church

From the January 1996 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Recently the Editor of the Christian Science religious periodicals, , had the opportunity to discuss membership in The First Church of Christ, Scientist, as well as the whole process of applying for membership, with Olga Chaffee, Clerk of The Mother Church. Their discussion follows.

Olga, when someone is considering membership in The Mother Church, what might you say to him or her about what it really means to be a member of this Church?

Well, I would like the individual to understand that becoming a member of The Mother Church is not a passive thing. Membership involves a very active participation in fulfilling the mission of Church. It is a participation that embraces not only the teachings, but the practice of Christian Science. The motive for uniting with this Church is to heal. This might be a good opportunity to differentiate between branch church membership and Mother Church membership.
