Testimonies of Healing

One December, my husband...

From the November 1996 issue of The Christian Science Journal

One December, my husband and I were not working. All the other parents were buying clothes for their children for Christmas. My children were starting to worry about this, and they asked me what we were going to do. I thought back to when I started learning about Christian Science.

This is what had occurred: The doctors had decided to remove my womb because they thought it had been destroyed by cancer. But I did not want to do this because I wanted to be married and to have babies. My fiancé, a Christian Scientist, encouraged me to trust God. I went to the Christian Science Reading Room, and the person I talked to about the situation told me that Mary Baker Eddy says children are "the spiritual thoughts and representatives of Life, Truth, and Love" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 582). I asked him what a spiritual thought was, and he told me they were good thoughts, thoughts that come from God. I was happy to hear that, and married and had three children. We were glad to have Christian Science in our home, and to have been able to attend church services and to take the children to Sunday School.

As I continued to pray about getting the children clothes for Christmas, another thought came to me. Man is the compound idea of infinite Spirit. I reasoned that if we are compound ideas of infinite Spirit, then there can be no end of good for us. I asked the children to come inside, and read something to them from Matthew: "Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt." And a few verses later, Christ Jesus says: "I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?" (6:19, 25, 26) That was very comforting to us.
