The simplicity and power of divine Science, Theology, and Medicine

From the January 1997 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Complicated problems are only complicated until we find the answers—and sometimes the answers are wonderfully simple and powerful. Christ Jesus, for example, had a way of cutting right through to the simple truth required to meet someone's need, and this truth would immediately set that individual free from years of suffering. What lay behind Jesus' ability to find the answers that healed was the fact that he regarded God—the all-knowing, divine Mind, or Spirit—as the source of truth in each case. In fact, the omniscience of God was what guided Jesus in all his teaching, of which he said, "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." John 8:31, 32.

Jesus' simple, liberating knowledge came to him, not from years of academic study, but from his close communion with God. This knowledge was apparent even at the tender age of twelve years, when Jesus was found "in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions. And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers." Luke 2:46, 47. Though Jesus took a keen interest in learning from the scholars of his time, it was his answers that astonished them.

In prayer, Jesus found answers coming to him directly from the divine Spirit. He discerned God's own thoughts, His spiritual ideas, which God perpetually imparts for His offspring—for every one of us—to know and express.
