As a child I loved attending the Christian Science Sunday School. I remember many times I rode home pondering a new spiritual insight that had enlightened my thought. I asked a lot of questions and always received an answer from the teacher or was directed to the place in the Bible, or in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, where an answer could be found. These answers were logical and held up under the intense scrutiny I gave them.
My parents obviously saw the value of Christian Science, but although a Christian Science practitioner was usually called when I was sick, if an illness seemed too distressing, I was taken to a doctor instead. From my teaching in the Sunday School, I saw the clear distinction between the two practices. I knew both couldn't be true, and I wanted to find out which, if either, was.
By the time I was in ninth grade I was sure that Christian Science was totally logical and was consistent with the healings of Jesus and others in the Bible. I still wasn't sure, however, how anyone could make it work for himself.
