Connecting Reading Rooms with Monitor outreach

From the March 1997 issue of The Christian Science Journal

For several months the Reading Room of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Lexington, Massachusetts, has reached out to its community by telephoning individuals, companies, and organizations that might be interested in a particular article from The Christian Science Monitor. Our calls have included schools, stores, teachers, a children's television advocacy group, church groups, prisons, and the police commission for our state.

We feel these calls have been a demonstration of our love for humanity. Our purpose in phoning embraces many of the focus and priority objectives of The Mother Church. This outreach has enabled us to answer questions about the Church of Christ, Scientist, its Reading Rooms, and the Monitor.

Many with whom we have been in contact seem genuinely grateful for the call and for our interest in their work. For example, a detective we phoned regarding a Monitor article about his station's police project told us that another local newspaper had also written about the project. But when the Reading Room attendant told him that the Monitor was distributed throughout the country and the world, he said, "Wow!" Learning that his fellow officer's picture would be seen on the West Coast, he said he'd buy a few copies at a local Reading Room and leave them on his friend's desk.
