"The moment you crack open Science and Health on a campus, you've enlisted!"

From the March 1997 issue of The Christian Science Journal

This feature provides a forum where people around the world ask questions vital to the activities of church, and others respond with fresh, healing approaches. Questions pertain to subjects such as the public practice of Christian Science healing and nursing; the vitality of church membership; churches and Sunday Schools ministering to their communities; spiritual exploration and outreach at colleges and universities.

How do I start a Christian Science organization (CSO) at my university?

The moment you crack open Science and Health on a campus, you've enlisted! The By-Law "Privilege of Members" in Mary Baker Eddy's Manual of The Mother Church gives you the outline and the tools (Art. XXIII, Sect. 8). It talks about two things: being a Mother Church member and sponsoring Christian Science lectures. As a member of The Mother Church, you use the Bible and Science and Health to shape your everyday life. If you have these books and the Manual, that's all you need to start a CSO. Ask yourself: Do I know these books? Are they my guide? Do I take ideas from these books into the classroom as a resource for class discussions? Then, as you listen for what the campus community needs, start thinking about how you'd respond with a lecture. It just takes one heart (and that's enough). You don't have to have any kind of complex organizational structure in place. If you're living the message of Science and Health, sharing that message with others on campus can't help but happen. To me, it's about feeling the authority of being a student of the textbooks and a Mother Church member. Feel the authority and empowerment of that!
