God, "the great Physician"

From the March 1998 issue of The Christian Science Journal

During my growing-up years, whenever I mentioned to anyone that I was a Christian Scientist, more often than not the response was, "Oh, you don't believe in doctors!" In those situations I always endeavored to leave the individual with a clearer idea of what Christian Scientists do believe.

Through the years, having been healed many times through Christian Science treatment, I have recognized that while those practicing this Science do not seek medical help, they do indeed have a Physician. Their Physician is always available, ready to help, supremely kind and gentle, utterly reliable. In fact, this Physician is perfect! The Christian Scientist's Physician is God. How heartening and comforting to realize that there isn't a problem, a situation, a condition, or even a question that we can't take to this Physician, for He is a specialist in every area. The Bible teaches us this. In Psalms we find, "Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases." Ps. 103:2, 3. And in Jeremiah, "Ah Lord God! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee." Jer. 32:17.

When we are faced with a challenge and perhaps feel that there is nowhere to turn, we can with genuine humility ask God for aid. God will rescue us. Not just sometimes or under certain circumstances or conditions, but always. God's help is specific, accurate, and immediate. God responds to our prayers and never withholds help from us. God's intention for man is that he flourish, that he glorify his Maker. God is Love, and man is maintained by his attentive, loving, divine Parent. God is Mother to us, and our divine and perfect Mother cares for every need of Her children. God is Father, and the divine Father provides the best for His offspring. Understanding this fundamental relation of God to man enables us to turn to Him in prayer and be delivered from doubt or fear, from whatever would cloud this relation and make God seem far off or unavailable. The spiritual fact is that man dwells with God harmoniously and that this harmony is uninterrupted by distress or discord, disease or even death.
