Finding meaning where we believe there is none

From the March 1998 issue of The Christian Science Journal

We seem to live in a random world of endless bits and pieces, each not much connected with anything else. Yet the more spiritually scientific we become, and the more spiritually-minded, the more we can find meaning where we believed there was none. Why bother? Because this finding deeply reassures, and it heals.

In reality, everything means something because God is Love, and therefore every item in His creation is significant to Him. He cares about it. This is implicit in Christ Jesus' word-picture "Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God? But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered." Luke 12:6,7.

In absolute terms everything has meaning because real, spiritual being—God and His creation— is all. And spiritual being means something; it means everything. Nonetheless, existence seems to consist of a physical planet peopled with mortals, characterized by random occurrences, blending good and evil. It appears to include many events and conditions that signify nothing very much. This can leave us mystified about life and its purpose, and we miss out on divine good. Science and Health lifts our thinking to ultimate meaning and tells how to find it: "The compounded minerals or aggregated substances composing the earth, the relations which constituent masses hold to each other, the magnitudes, distances, and revolutions of the celestial bodies, are of no real importance, when we remember that they all must give place to the spiritual fact by the translation of man and the universe back into Spirit." Mary Baker Eddy, Science and Health, p. 209.
