Two years ago, I found my department was completely eliminated, even though we had been performing a unique function for twelve years that made us, we thought, indispensable. I was told that I was to be part of a reduction in force, in six weeks. This came as quite a surprise as I had just received an award for preparing on my own initiative a format and audit document that would be used corporation-wide.
Fear whispered in my thought: "There are no jobs out there, and besides you are considered a 'senior citizen.' Who's going to hire you?" As a lifelong Christian Scientist, I had always relied on God, and I had seen God's care in my and our family's experience for thirty years.
I started praying about the job situation. I looked to the Bible for direction and pondered passages from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, as well. In the chapter entitled "The Apocalypse," Mary Baker Eddy talks about how God guided the children of Israel and points out, ". . so shall the spiritual idea guide all right desires in their passage from sense to Soul, from a material sense of existence to the spiritual, up to the glory prepared for them who love God" (p. 566). Well, I certainly had "right desires" to be of service and support my family in this new employment challenge.
